Women Embrace Green Consciousness
Small Ways You Can Make A Big Difference

No matter where you turn, it seems there’s no hotter trend right now than “Going Green.” As environmental consciousness sweeps across North America, a strong majority of women business owners and leaders are embracing the Green Movement. They want to know how to get green and stay green.

In “Going Green,” eWomenNetwork conducted a survey of its members. Here’s what we discovered.

Green Survey

  • 74% of businesswomen, if given the choice, are willing to buy organic products even if it means paying more for them.

  • 73% of businesswomen admit needing more education about the Green Movement and would welcome tips and ideas on how to make their homes and offices green.

  • 62% of businesswomen are interested in learning more about how “Going Green” can be good for business.

  • 59% of businesswomen are more concerned about taking care of our planet than making a profit by “Going Green.”

  • 57% of businesswomen would like to attend a green seminar where a panel of experts would share strategies for how to profit by engaging in the Green Movement.

eWomenNetwork and our partner, OPEN from American Express, put together a few simple tips you can start right now that will help turn your home and office green.

Green Tips

At Home

Watch the temp. Set your dishwasher water temperature to 120 degrees or the "low" setting.

Freshen Up. Make sure the "fresh air" vent on your air conditioner is closed so you are not cooling outside air.

Go fluorescent. Use fluorescent light bulbs. They use one-fourth of the energy of traditional incandescent bulbs and last six times longer.

Audit home energy. Consider conducting a home energy audit. The U.S. Department of Energy offers a free step-by-step guide. Also, many utility companies offer free home energy audits to help consumers identify areas in their homes that may not be energy efficient. In addition, many utility companies offer rebate programs to help pay for the cost of energy-efficient upgrades.

Plant a tree. Or support an organization that’s helping to reforest the planet. A single tree will absorb approximately one ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime.

At Work

To print or not to print? Ask yourself if you really need to print that 40-page PowerPoint presentation. If so, consider printing on both sides of the paper.

Think ink. Color printing generally uses more ink (and more ink cartridges), so print in black and white when you can. To conserve even more ink, print in draft mode. It will generally lighten the shade, but you’ll still be able to read your copy clearly.

Turn it off. When you leave for the day, shut down your computer and turn off the lights.

Drink up. But use your own ceramic mug or refillable water bottle instead of disposable cups. Consider using real flatware and plates as well.

Recycle. Order recycled products and reuse items whenever possible.
