Five ways to lower your auto insurance bill

With these five simple steps, you may be able to lower the cost of your auto insurance.

1. Check your rates:

  • Rates can vary from company to company, and you may be able to find lower rates for the same coverage. If you haven’t checked your rates in a while, you may want to check your current rates against other carriers to see how they compare.

2. Ask for available discounts:

  • Many insurance carriers offer various discounts such as:
    • Safety-feature discounts for airbags, anti-lock brakes, etc.
    • Good Student discounts for children maintaining a certain GPA
    • Multiple-policy discount for having your auto and homeowners insurance with one company

3. Check your credit report:

  • Be sure to review your credit report for any potential inaccuracies with all three credit reporting agencies. Most insurance companies now use credit scores as part of their pricing model as statistics show a direct correlation between credit score and risk.

4. Revisit your deductibles:

  • You could elect to carry higher deductibles, and assume a higher level of out-of-pocket expense in the event of a loss. If you carry low deductibles, ask how much you would save if you increase the deductible to $500 or even $1000.

5. Choose the right vehicle:

  • Avoid vehicles that tend to be more expensive to insure such as those that have a higher dollar value, high performance vehicles or those vehicles that tend to be more expensive to repair.
