Timothy Jaccard – 2006
"Humanitarian of the Year
"

Timothy Jaccard, a full-time Nassau County Police Ambulance Medical Technician was only doing his job when he came across something that would change his life forever.  In 1997, Tim, was called to Hempstead, N.Y., to remove the body of a deceased and discarded full-term infant from a toilet.  After fulfilling this duty, Tim, who was profoundly moved by the event, adopted the baby in order to give her a proper burial.

After this experience, Timothy realized the need to stop infant abandonment on a larger scale, which led him to found “The AMT Children of Hope.”

Without regard to race, color, age, creed or national origin AMT Children of Hope volunteers are dedicated to saving the lives of infants who have been abandoned. AMT Children of Hope acts as a Safe Haven and accepts newborns from a parent or guardian who wishes to relinquish custody. They then refer to the appropriate government agencies and other non-profit social service agencies capable of providing advice and counsel to pre- and postpartum persons if the need arises.

AMT Children of Hope also makes arrangements for the dignified burials of abandoned and unclaimed deceased infants or children, alone or in conjunction with appropriate governmental agencies or other charitable organizations.

Since 1997 Timothy has taken his quest nationwide and has lobbied for legislation in almost every state in order to make it easier for women in crisis to get help for themselves and their babies without the fear of prosecution.  Tim’s tireless dedication to this cause has resulted in the Infant Abandonment Protection Act also know as “The Safe Haven” law that has been enacted in 48 states.
